The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, recently introduced a new campus gathering to celebrate creativity and foster community. The monthly Talent Showcase, hosted by the Vision Care Technology program, transforms a space in the Occupational Technology building into a vibrant, coffeehouse-style venue where students share their artistic expressions. With live acoustic performances, poetry readings and an art walk, the event creates an inviting space for individuals to highlight their talents in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
Eric Garcia, a vision care technology instructor, optician, and local radio DJ, spearheaded the initiative to bring positive energy and connection to campus. Recognizing the impact of recent challenges on student life, Garcia saw an opportunity to create an event that fosters appreciation for the diverse talents within SIPI’s community.
"We wanted something that would build synergy, bring students together and provide a venue for self-expression," Garcia said.
The inaugural event featured two student musicians who performed solo acoustic sets and an emerging DJ who set the mood between performances with live mixes. Students also participated in poetry readings, further broadening the range of artistic expression.
Plans for future showcases include increased involvement from the culinary arts program, which will provide baked goods, and a potential shift to an outdoor venue for warmer weather.
With enthusiastic support from students, faculty, and SIPI leadership, including Vice-President of Academics Timothy Begay, EdD, this monthly event is expected to grow. The goal is to entertain and provide an inclusive space where students can explore and share their hidden talents.
“You never know what kind of talent someone has until they have a place to share it,” Garcia said.
The organizers are shaping the SIPI Talent Showcase as an inspiring and welcoming stage for all.
